27 October 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a document containing a synthesis of parties’ views on the implications of the inclusion of reforestation of lands with forest in exhaustion as afforestation and reforestation (A/R) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/INF.15).
The document was prepared in response to the invitation by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) for parties and admitted observer organizations to submit their views on the implications of the inclusion of reforestation of lands with forest in exhaustion as A/R CDM project activities.
Further, the SBSTA requested the Secretariat to prepare a synthesis report based on views submitted. Submissions were made by eight parties: Algeria, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, the EU, India, Japan and Sri Lanka; and two admitted organizations, namely the Global Forest Coalition and Global Witness (on behalf of the Ecosystems Climate Alliance and CDM Watch). The document presents a synthesis of the information and views contained in these submissions. It features chapters on the legal, methodological and policy implications related to the inclusion of reforestation of lands with forest in exhaustion as A/R CDM project activities. The document will be considered by the SBSTA at its 35th session.
